The Victory of a Mother and Son in Kerala PSC Exam

The people of Kerala observe a government job as their top consideration. Due to the changing exam patterns, PSC aspirants are going through chaos. Like William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, they are in a state of “to be or not to be” to continue their studies or not. The news that a mother and son from Malappuram had cleared the PSC exams simultaneously was an exception to this. Bindu an Anganwadi teacher who was forty-two and her twenty-four-year-old son Vivek had achieved success in the 2022 Public Service Commission examination.

Bindu began reading books to encourage Vivek in his studies as he was in the tenth standard. But it motivated her to prepare for her PSC exams. Bindu cleared the Last Grade Servants exam while her son cleared the Lower Divisional Clerk exam with 92 and 38th rank respectively.

Vivek cleared it in his first chance and for Bindu, it was her fourth attempt. Bindu could attend the coaching classes only on Sundays. Her friends, son and tutors in the coaching centre were her pillars of motivation and success. She has been preparing for the ICDS supervisor exam while she got the Last Grade Examination. ‘As she was preparing for her ICDS exam, she got it as a bonus’Vivek said. The age limit for women in stream two is forty but there is some relaxation for specific categories.

She says that she didn’t study continuously. She started studying six months before the exam and took a break until the announcement of the next exam date. She says she was an example of what a PSC aspirant should be and should not be. She advises all to continue their studies and success will come as a result of hard work.

Mother and son attended sessions together in the coaching centre but they were never interested in combining studies at home.”We went together to coaching classes. My mother brought me to this and my father arranged all the facilities for us. We got a lot of motivation from our teachers. We both studied together but never thought that we would qualify together. We‘re both very happy” said Vivek.

They gave appreciation to their teacher Babu sir, at the coaching centre, who helped them succeed in the exam. Chandran, husband of Bindu is an employee at KSRTC depot, Edappal. Bindu also received the state award for best Anganwadi teacher in the year 2019. The success story of this mother and son is an inspiration to all the aspirants who are aiming for a government job.
