The first modified bio village in India was established in Tripura. The Government of Tripura intends to create at least hundreds of bio villages. Ten of these have already finished. Daspara, a hamlet in the Charilam constituency of the Sepahijala district, is the first of its kind. The Daspara village has now been transformed into a society that lives and works in harmony with nature. Daspara is home to 64 families who rely on agriculture and fishing for their living. Chemical fertilisers are used in less amount here.
Daspara
Daspara is one of the five successful bio village 2.0 concepts developed in Tripura which supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to reduce global warming. The Directorate of Bio-Technology, a division of The Science and Technology department, has established the bio villages in Tripura. The idea of bio village was to reduce the effects of climate change.
The successful venture
The Directorate of Biotechnology, a department of the Tripura government, initially promoted the idea of a bio village in 2018, to promote organic farming. Tripura is the first state in the nation to have successfully established five bio villages using renewable energy.
An official from the Science and Technology Department noted that the northeast region had not previously seen the establishment of bio villages. Even though bio villages are not new, this particular one has undergone many changes. He observed.“In earlier bio villages, there was only organic farming, but in our case, organic farming is just a component. Apart from this, we have incorporated renewable energy”
What is a Bio village?
A bio village is a village or region where inhabitants dwell among the natural surroundings and promote a bio-diversified ecological balance. They will engage in organic farming in this setting, using natural fertilisers and seeds.
Characteristics of the Bio Village Programme
While planning a bio village, it is important to consider the following factors: protecting water resources, maximising the use of agricultural land, protecting the environment and ecological balance, producing native or local fisheries, keeping animals, and planting trees. It is necessary to implement new technical breakthroughs to monitor how these aspects affect overall ecological and agricultural development.
M. S. Swaminathan’s opinion on bio village
According to the father of the Indian Green Revolution, Dr M S Swaminathan, the idea of a bio village involves the adoption of a human-centred development strategy that places a focus on technology development and distribution in rural regions that is pro-nature, pro-poor, pro-women, and pro-livelihood. Sustainable rural development is its goal.
Now, Tripura has gained attention on a global scale by creating and establishing the first bio village in the nation with the primary objective of ensuring sustainable development.
